My project focuses on identifying genetic factors associated to with age-related macular degeneration (AMD). Currently only 40-70% of the genetic heritability is explained by mostly common variations. We hypothesize that a large proportion of the heritability in AMD can be explained by rare, highly penetrant variants in genes that have not yet been associated with the disease. Using whole-exome-sequencing data of over a 1000 patients, including multiple large families, we hope to further elucidate the genetic background involved in AMD.

My research project focuses on Stargardt disease, the most prevalent inherited juvenile retinal dystrophy, which causes inevitable loss of central vision. In collaboration with the departments of Health Evidence and Radiology, we are developing an accurate multimodal model for the progression of Stargardt disease by using quantified imaging modalities. This model will provide outcome measures in future clinical trials, such as gene therapy.

My project is about the prevention of posterior capsular opacification (PCO). This is a result of a fibrotic reaction of the lens epithelium in response to cataract surgery. For my project, I use a porcine eye model to monitor PCO development for the application of injectable accommodating lenses. My main activity is testing different nanofiber gels for the prevention of PCO. So I perform the surgery on the porcine lenses, test material properties and culture the samples for microscopic evaluation.

The most important symptom related to glaucoma is visual field loss. Before visual field loss presents itself, we noticed that patients with glaucoma often experience difficulties with bright or dim lights, or changes in the amount of light. My current project is about exploring these kind of light depended complaints by a self-invented questionnaire.
